We need you!
Nominations are now open for the elections for the 2010-2012 Social Liberal Forum Council. Anyone who is a member of the Social Liberal Forum is eligible to stand (to register as a member – for free – go to our join us page).
What does the SLF Council do?
We are a new organisation and so the SLF Council does not yet exist. The first Council will get to carve out exactly how its role will work in practice. But the new SLF constitution agreed in March this year states that the Council is responsible for the overall strategy of the organisation.
- consider resolutions agreed at each General Meeting;
- develop the strategic direction of the organisation;
- agree the Organisation’s priorities;
- agree the Organisation’s budget.
The Council elects its own Chair and appoints the Director who, in turn, is responsible for the day to day running of the organisation.
How many places are there to be elected?
We want the Social Liberal Forum to grow organically, and to avoid being overly prescriptive about how large we should make the council initially. For this reason, while the the constitution sets an upper limit of council members to 20, the precise number will depend on the number of people who put themselves forward to stand. If we have 12 candidates we will elect 9 council members, if we have 20 candidates, we will elect 15 council members, and so on. This also ensures that we always have competitive elections.
The election itself will be conducted using the Single Transferable Vote system.
What is the time table for the election?
Nominations close: 25 July
Ballot opens (estimated): 30 July
Ballot closes: 13 August
The ballot will be open to everyone who joins the Social Liberal Forum by the close of nominations and will be conducted online, except for people who request to join as offline members (and pay £5).
